Female Hit Squad Stalks 'Godfather' Paul Elizondo

If the uprising of female opponents to the male dominated mob in County Commissioners Court succeeds, it will be a victory for every woman in Bexar County.

The much anticipated Paul Elizondo-Delicia Herrera war will be a tough fight.

A recent fundraiser for Commissioner Elizondo was surreal. The courtiers came to kiss his ring as they bowed and handed over fat checks with lots of zeros. He accepted their “respect” in a dark room brimming with fear and nervous energy and money. The overweight and diabetic Godfather was on a sugar high from all the tense love and money.

This former Marine and band leader commands a tremendous amount of clout at Commissioners Court. He directs the purchasing operations in the old red Courthouse haunted by the ghostly political souls of enemies Elizondo has "slain."

Former San Antonio City Council's Delicia Herrera informed The Don recently that she planned to displace him. She might as well have whacked him in the kisser with a cold carp. Elizondo has now been challenged to a mob war in 2010. To add more disrespect to the insult, it was an "uppity young Latina woman" who administered the satin-gloved-slap of defiance.

Elizondo is an old school establishment goon who is feared by those who do business with the County.

Carri Baker Wells, a lieutenat for the tax collecting Linebarger Goggan family, acts like a giggling little girl entranced when the Godfather glances her way. He is the big sugar daddy who has a basket full of sweetness for the children who are loyal to him. The bad children get nothing.

The Commissioner is literally the Godfather to several of State Senator Leticia Van de Putte’s children. Elizondo is also very close to Tax Assessor Sylvia Romo. How close? I won't say here.

Elinzondo's sworn enemies include the Bexar County Deputies Association which endorsed the late Enrique Barrera three years ago. It was a betrayal in the blurry eyes of the Don.

Bexar County Constables also loathe Elizondo for his brutish tactics.

How will Delicia overthrow him?

She is a product of the Southwest Voter Registration Project founded by voting rights hero Willie Velasquez. She knows how to get out the vote. My sources tell me that former Valero chief Bill Greehy adores Delicia and would be supportive.She also has a very rich personal friend who wants her to take out Elizondo.

Let me say that Latinas on the Westside and the Southside will need to be motivated to work together for Delicia. Why? Damn it, we need a woman on the Bexar County Commissioners Court. The Godfather is 74 years old and he has been in his comfortable chair since 1983. Time for change, and a woman could send those wornout shoes awalking, and replace them with her own stylish pair of stilleto heels.

We need Delicia to win in 2010.

Paul, come on tubby, make room for the young folks. Why do you have to hold onto power forever? Your health has been terrible in the past two years. You have missed a tremendous amount of work and you really need a break. Give it up and do the right thing.

Delicia, keep going and push hard in your quest. The Bexar County Deputies will be behind you. The constables will help you. There are thousands of Latinas who want to be represented on that court. Don’t listen to the people Cuban hack Jose Menendez sends your way.

El Cubano wants you out of the running so he can make a challenge. The last thing he wants is some chica getting in the way.

You can speak for us on issues that affect women and children. You can speak for the Westside small business owners who don’t have a voice with the arrogant Elizondo. He means nothing to them. We need you!

It is time for a change in the political order. As they say in Sicily -- and maybe soon in the Bexar political world -- "women are more dangerous than shotguns."
