Superintendant Jerry Christian told the Lightning Thursday that he's heard the rumors of video and still photos depicting the drinking party that resulted in the suspension of 14 cheerleaders from the squad, (See Stories Below) but he says he has no knowledge that such materials exist, and further believes the rumors not to be true. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission's Lt. Christina Guerra has also heard the rumors, and has warned unnamed persons not to alter or destroy such materials, if indeed they exist. At least two underaged drinking party cases in Alamo Heights are currently under investigation by TABC. If obtained, the tape will be turned over to TABC. Other use of the rumored tape will be decided by Lightning management at a later time. * * * 4-09-2002 Cheerleaders' 'Booze Party' Investigation
Extended With New Information As stories circulate about a purported video and photo depiction of the AHHS cheerleaders "wild booze party," the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is warning anyone who might have such photos or tapes against destroying them or otherwise tampering with them; also a second TABC probe has begun into a traffic accident last week involving underaged Alamo Heights students. Concerning the rumored video, Lt. Christina Guerra told the Lightning that "to tamper with or alter or destroy those tapes or photos would be illegal, since they are considered evidence." She asked that any one with information about those recordings or pictures come forward. Guerra also confirmed to the Lightning that a second investigation has begun into a recent car crash involving AHHS students. Guerra says the kids had left yet another drinking party when the accident happened. "It involved some of the same party animals," Guerra said. Though the investigation was said to be winding down, Guerra now estimates at least two more weeks will be needed, in view of new information, some of which emerged during a Federal hearing challenging one girl's suspension. (See Stories Below) The TABC is awaiting transcripts of that court action. Guerra has refused to name the adult who is targeted in the first investigation, she did say the person was present at that party, and knew what was going on. Meanwhile, a federal judge said Tuesday that he is not convinced that AHSD punishes girls more harshly than boys. In a written order, US District Judge Fred Biery denied an injunction requested by parent Marc Perkins. * * * 4-8-2002 Video Of 'Wild' Cheerleader Party? The party which resulted in a TABC investigation, and the banning of 14 Alamo Heights cheerleaders from spirit activities, may have been documented by one or more of the underaged partiers, the Lightning has learned. More details emerged last week (See Stories Below) as testimony at a Federal civil hearing began, challenging the cheerleading ban on one of the girls. A Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission investigation is expected to finish in a few days. The party involved drinking, hazing, and kissing games. The Lightning is looking into claims that still or video pictures of the booze bash were taken that night by at least one of the students. If such documentation exists, the Lightning will attempt to obtain it. A judge now says the case will remain in Federal court, and will be heard this summer. The cheerleader tryouts will be allowed to proceed, though the suspended girls will not be allowed to participate. * * * 4-5-2002 New Details Of AHHS Cheerleaders 'Booze
Party' Emerge Alamo Heights Cheerleaders drank and forced junior girls to wear bras on their heads and kiss boys at a "wild booze party" earlier this year, according to school officials. School Superintendent Jerry Christian testified in Federal Court Thursday that a district investigation of the cheerleaders' scandal at Alamo Heights High School led to the suspension of 14 cheerleaders for underaged drinking, and hazing. Christian said a party in Alamo Heights in early March began with drinking among junior and senior girls. Christian testified that the senior cheerleaders blindfolded the juniors and took them for a drive. While the girls were away, Christian said, male friends and students were asked to go to the house and wait in a back room. When the cheerleaders returned they drank more, and then the juniors were told to "take off their bras" and "fasten them around their heads." The senior girls then said they would give the juniors a "kiss goodbye," Christian said. The boys, however, were brought in to kiss the girls instead. Christian was testifying in a lawsuit brought by one of the girls booted from the squad who is fighting the suspension. Further action on the lawsuit is set for next Tuesday. As reported first by the Lightning in mid March, (See Stories Below) a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission investigation is ongoing to find out who supplied the alcohol. At least one parent is suspected of participating in the party. That investigation is expected to conclude next week. * * * 4-1-2002 State Investigation Of AHHS The Texas Alcoholic And Beverage Commission (TABC) could finish it's investigation of under-aged drinking at an Alamo Heights "wild booze party' this week, according to Lt. Christina Guerra of that agency. As first reported by the Lightning (See Previous Stories Below) the TABC has been investigating the origin of the alcohol and the alleged involvement of at least one adult in the incident which resulted in the activity suspension of most of the Alamo Heights High School cheerleading squad. Guerra refused to give details, but said the investigation is nearing and end. -Previous Stories- 3-22-02 Alamo Heights Trustees Approve Cheerleader
Ban Alamo Heights trustees have refused to let six suspended cheerleaders try out for next year's squad. In a closed door decision, the Alamo Heights School Board decided to support the administrative decision to ban the girls from spirit activities. The cheerleaders had appealed to the board after administrators suspended them from the squad following allegations of drinking and participating in hazing at a party. (See stories below) A hearing in state district court next week in the case of one student. Marc Perkins and Lauren Phillips had filed suit to force the district to allow their daughters to try out, and they were granted a temporary restraining order that halted the auditions earlier this month. Party: Complaint The parent of an Alamo Heights High School student is accused of providing the alcohol at what has been called a "wild booze bash" which resulted in the suspension of all but one of the cheerleaders from the school squad, the Lightning has learned. Lt. Christina Guerra of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission told the Lightning that Alamo Heights superintendent, Dr. Jerry Christain filed a complaint which named the location and adult allegedly involved. That investigation should be completed in the next two weeks. Also present at the party were members of the football squad and at least one other adult, the Lightning has also learned. Alamo Heights school trustee Al Silva has confirmed that his daughter was also at the party. Silva refused comment to reporters on the district's actions. The school board meets later this month to address the problem. A court action has also been filed by two of the cheerleaders over their suspension from the squad. -Previous Story- March 8, 2002 School Trustee's Daughter Alamo Heights school trustee Al Silva has confirmed that his daughter was a member of the high school cheerleading squad suspended over alcohol violations. Silva refused comment to reporters on the district's decision. Meanwhile the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) is investigating a so-called "booze party" that took place last weekend at a private residence in Alamo Heights, the Lightning has learned. Also, local police, as of Friday, had not been notified by school officials about the underaged drinking incident. All but one of the school's cheerleaders have been suspended from their duties, and banned from future activities after what has been described as a "wild party" that included hazing. Dr. Jerry Christian, Superintendent Of the Alamo Heights Independent School District confirmed that agents with TABC were looking into the incident. He was not at liberty, he said, to discuss details. He did tell the Express-News that there had been problems with the cheerleaders before. "There was some history of concerns regarding the squad," Christian said. Some students may not have had past problems, but they were punished "as a squad" because they put on the party together, he said. He did say that Alamo Heights police have not been contacted concerning the underaged drinking, or the possession of liquor by minors. "The TABC is investigating the matter," he said. The Lightning has also learned that at least three of the partiers who had been drinking "heavily" drove vehicles home following the incident. The party was held at an undisclosed private residence in the posh Alamo Heights area. It is believed, but not confirmed, that the home belongs to the parents of one of the cheerleaders. The origin of the alcohol in question has not been revealed. Alamo Heights High School has halted its varsity cheerleading tryouts following a state district judge's issuance of a restraining order on behalf of two cheerleaders cut from the squad. The school sent out an official letter informing teachers that the "Mules" cheerleaders had been taken off the squad for drinking alcohol at a private party. 15 of the 16 cheerleaders were involved. No charges have been filed, so far. The school's letter to teachers was released Wednesday:
